This narrative is the second one made by the children of second grade. It regards the twinning between them and children of Galkayo school in Somalia. The main difference between this narrative and the previous one is the use of English language. Children already knew the 1001stories engine because they used it last year and at the beginning of this school period, but this work was different. The chosen essay is the comparison between Italian and Somalian food. This theme is part of a book children are doing together with the children of the CFS (child friendly space) of Galkayo. It’s a book of narratives that allows students of both countries to know each other and to compare each other’s lifestyle. The chapter regarding the food has so become a multimedia narration thank to the 1001stories engine.
The teachers have organized the work in the two primary classes, section A and B of Bussero according to their teaching program. The two classes have worked separately. They shared the work watching video and photographs of the other class.
Children have chosen which narration needed to be translated by the teacher. Children have recorded the narration few words at a time, because for them was difficult to read the English test. At the end of every sentence they listened to it in order to memorize it. This is why the narration had to be very simple.
The main problems were the use of the English language, because the children are very young, and the remote working with Somalia. Unfortunately in Somalia there’s not the possibility to have a stable internet connection because of the war. Teachers had to photograph children and to travel from Somalia to Italy to exchange their work.
Children of Somalia will see the complete narration at the end of the work when it will be sent in Somalia on a CD, while Italian students are having the possibility to know their friends thanks to the LIM and the Facebook page created for the project. All the children have worked with great enthusiasm, they have always shown attention to the various topics and have always participated in the activities, choosing photos, deciding the content and texts and trying to speak in English.
