Si rintracciano le radici culturali che hanno generato la pratica sportiva nel mondo greco, romano e daunio attraverso l’esempio delle colonie romane di Herdonia, Sipontum e Luceria. Si sono sintetizzate le tipologie di gare e discipline praticate dagli uomini e dalle donne, analizzando anche i passatempi dei bambini, autentici giochi sportivi che riprendevano quelli dei più grandi, contribuendo a preparare fisicamente i giovani. Si propone inoltre una sintesi delle lotte gladiatorie delle quali restano notevoli attestazioni nella Daunia antica ed a Luceria. L’excursus storico rimarca quanto questi aspetti abbiano avuto delle ricadute significative nella società antica come in quella attuale.
Herdonia,Sipontum and Luceria represent a good example of cultural roots that are behind the sporting practice in the Greek, Roman,Daunian world. The types of competitions and disciplines practiced by men and women have been summed up also by analysing the kids’ hobbies, real sports games which imitated adults' ones and helped to train young people. We also propose to the attenction of the reader a synthesis of gladiator fights of which remarkable testimonies remain in the ancient Daunia and Luceria. This historical excursus points out the considerable importance that this practice has had in the past and has got still now.
